Hello and welcome! My name is Sarah and I am the artist, calligrapher and designer behind Sarah Jane Art. I live in the beautiful city of Bath, England, with my wonderful husband, Matt, and our adorable baby boy, Benjamin.

This blog is my space to share the journey behind my art – from my creative experiences and sources of inspiration to tips on calligraphy, art, and stationery design.

My Love for Calligraphy

I’ve been practicing calligraphy since 2019, but my fascination with beautiful handwriting started as a child. Growing up, I was influenced by my dad’s creative eye and the emphasis he placed on the importance of well-presented handwriting. My love for letters has only grown stronger over the years, sparked by school lessons and travel. From the Egyptian hieroglyphics and ancient cave paintings to the intricate calligraphy in old books, and Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic scripts – I’ve always been captivated by the artistic ways people communicate through lettering.

For me, there is something incredibly satisfying about beautifully written words and letters. In a world dominated by digital communication, taking the time to write by hand is far more meaningful and personal than any email or text could ever be.

My Artistic Journey

Creativity has always been at my core. I’ve made greeting cards for as long as I can remember. Art has always been a part of who I am. After school, I followed the traditional academic path – the route many of us were encouraged to take. But the need to create has never left me.

Over the years, I’ve experimented with different mediums, from drawing with pencil and pen to painting with acrylics and ink. About six years ago, my husband bought me a beautiful set of Sennelier watercolours, and that was it! I instantly fell in love with watercolour painting, and it’s been my creative focus ever since.

Sharing my Passion

Through this blog, I hope to share my passions, and to inspire and encourage others to pick up a pen, nib, or brush and to follow their hearts.
